It used to be the nr. 1 museum in Norway regarding mineral displays. Now only the silver display remains. This should beconsidered to be a national emberrasment. To hide all those wonderful minerals and crystals from the children and rock-minded people of the world is a scandal. I give a star for the breath-taking silver display, but otherwise it would be a one star review.

This museum is an interesting museum about Norwegian minting and the silver mines which provides the material of the coin.

The mines are really impressive. They were active for more than 300 years and produced an enormous quantity of silver. It was interesting to learn about mine operations prior to the invention of dynamite. We also learned about German influence on the area and history of the mines in World War II. The mines are enormous. You will only get to see a small portion of them, but it's plenty to see. In addition to the mines themselves you do get to see some equipment that operated drills and pumps. You will also be able to see a working elevator that dates to the 19th century. They warn you that it's cold in the mine. This is accurate. It was only a few degrees above freezing. Bring a warm jacket and dress appropriately even if it's warm outside. I found that I was fine without gloves. If you have even a slight interest in mining or history, Sølvgruvene is a great place to visit. I highly recommend it. The mine is neat to see, our tour guide was awesome, and it was a highly unique experience.

We had a lovely trip to the Kongsberg Silver Mines and especially enjoyed all the knowledge the staff had to offer. We learned a lot and had a really good time.
