This is Hotel California, you can check out any time you like but you can never leave! I will recommend everybody who gets the opportunity, to pay this magical house a visit. This is also where Voss Kaffibrenneri has it's base, and every morning the smell of roasted coffee fills the air with promises of a good day!

Spent three winters here between 85-87. Fantastic base for ski touring and wild camping trips.

If you are looking for a luxury, glittering shopping mall-like hotel, please stay away from here! But if you are in search of relax, nature, healthy food, peace for the body and the spirit, this is for you. You get here by car or by train. They have a tiny station, Orneberget, practically for themselves, with a trail leading to the building. If you have bags, however, stop at Mjolfjell and ask the landlord for a lift. From here you have several hiking choices, or you can get the train at Orneberget, go to Myrdal and catch the famous Flamsbana (Flam railway). From Myrdal you may also rent a bike and explore the mountains. My visit was in the summer; in winter I think there is large opportunity for cross-country or alpine skiing. They roast coffee in-house, so you can taste a cup in front of the fire, in the company of one of the house friendly dogs. My favorite is the cozy reading room, with a wonderful view to the south, maps and a large table where you can plan next day's hike. Breakfast is plentiful and varied. The cook is good. Supper is one-course, with a dessert. The goulash was excellent. Rooms are tiny, with two-decked beds. We had a private bathroom. Furniture is basic. The three buildings were built about 1940, and that is the style. We slept well, the bath was clean; after that, you go to the common spaces, which are large and comfortable. The owners have a very spiritual attitude, especially towards the environment. My family and I felt at home, and had interesting chats with the staff about history, culture, languages.. I highly recommend this place; but read again the first sentence of this review!
