The County of Hordaland established Bybanen AS in 2009 to administer, operate and maintain the infrastructure of Bybanen, the Bergen Light Rail system. The company will maintain a 10 kilometer double-track rail system from the center of Bergen to the town of Nesttun. A new workshop and operations centre has been constructed at Kronstad. In addition, Bybanen AS is responsible for the rolling stock for Bybanen. It has purchased twelve low-floor light rail vehicles of the type Variobahn from Stadler Pankow GmbH (Berlin, Germany). Bybanen is expected to open in June 2010.
