When I went to this cool church, it was during the offseason. Unfortunately, I could not go inside the building as it was closed, but it was still fun to look around. I saw the building on a meme on Instagram, originally from Tumblr. The building is made from 400-year-old wood, made with no nails or glue, and has dragons built into it to ward off the evil spirits. The scenery is beautiful, and has a nice short hike to get to it. Online research says that a radical black metal musician burned down the original church alongside a couple of other churches, and it took about six years to rebuild it. The musician was charged with arson and murder, but not for this specific church, the Fantoft Stavkirke (Fantoft Stav Church).

Nestled in the middle of tall trees, this is a rebuilt stave church fashioned from the original one that was burned down years ago. The carvings inside were so intricate, combining the ancient Norwegian mysticism (dragon heads) and Christianity (an altar with a figure of supposed to be Christ). You need to pay kr50 to get inside. Different prices for students and kids.
Nice church. Located at the end of a road with a small parking lot. You can also get there from the main street (E39). Probably easier. Worth going.
One of the finest places in Bergen and very good tourist spot. The church itself is a master piece showing ancient talent in building astonishing architecture. The environment is beautiful with lots of trees, flowers and nice trails to walk. I will highly recommend this place.
No information page about opening hours, but seems to be closed in Sunday’s. The location is beautiful, as is the stave church. However: it is not the original, but a replica! And it is circumvented by a really ugly fence.. when asking entrance fees, at least try to do an effort in presenting your attraction.
This church is so beautiful the carvings are so detailed and beautiful. The location is a little hidden, you have to follow a path into the woods and all of a sudden... there it is. There is a little cost to get in and see it and there are bathrooms close by - that was nice. Definitely worth the trip there! ️
First thing to note, it is a reproduction, the original burned down. Second, it is small and expensive. It was about 20 for 2 adults and 2 kids to visit, but somebody has to pay for upkeep or places like this will go away as many already have. Most of what you can see by paying admission you can see from standing outside the fence for free. You can get better views of the outside by climbing the hill next door. What you do not get for free of course is the inside. I still give it 4-stars because it is a nice reproduction but I personally thought it was pricey for what it was.
Fascinating structure from Medieval times. Must be understanding of the history to appreciate this place. Our guide from EF Tours did a great job of setting the stage.
