The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research has appointed "The Norwegian council of societal safety and emergency management within higher education". This applies for both private and governmental education institutions across the country. The ambition is for these institutions to enable them to work systematically with risk awareness, risk recognition and risk management. It's mandate specifically includes the curbing and prevention of radicalisation and violent extremism. Administratively, the Council is located at The University of Stavanger (UiS), Faculty of Science and Technology. The Council in brief: • Established in 2017 by the Ministry of Education and Research. • Springs from the national lessons learned processes in the aftermath of the terror attacks on July 22nd 2011, and calls from high-level politicians for stronger awareness concerning emergency preparedness. • The Council consists of 14 members from public and private colleges and universities from all over Norway. • The Council’s secretariat is currently staffed by project manager Sindre Bø and senior advisor Inghild Marie Mjelva, plus a reference group consisting of three associate professors: Sissel H. Jore, Bjørn I. Kruke and Anja Dalgaard-Nielsen. The Council’s primary tasks: - Focus on the importance of societal safety and preparedness in the university and college sector. - Prevention of radicalisation and violent extremism. - Contribute to better collaboration between a university/college and local emergency services, businesses, authorities and other relevant stakeholders, especially regarding exchange of experience and best practice. - Improve the academic sector’s knowledge of officialrequirements and guidelines. - Risk-analyses, crisis management, emergency plans, information security, guidelines, facilitate training, prepare the annual conference.
